What is Missing Pages?
Missing Pages is a personal journey through the history of the United States and how we teach it in school. With a growing call to overhaul the way we teach history in this country, I decided to examine the current state of history education by taking a deep dive into the AP US History class I took in high school. While many people have labeled this curriculum racist and in need of reform, I remain skeptical but open to being persuaded otherwise.
I explore the history of this nation, examining primary sources and modern historical works alike. As we journey through each era of American history, I'll share my thoughts and opinions, as well as fill in the gaps and flesh out the details that were left out of the class. In each episode, I will share what I learned in my history class and discuss the themes and narratives present in the era, noting any major differences. As we go deeper into each season, I'll include addendums, corrections, and more detailed writings to fully flesh out the American story.
I also write monthly (or so…) essays about a range of topics, but I focus mainly on how history intersects with our modern life. I explore how events happening now mirror those in history, how people make incorrect assumptions on the state of history education, and how people use history as a cudgel rather than a learning tool.
So join me on this journey as we fill in the missing pages of American history.
